Recipe: Kanarie Club’s French toast in Amsterdam

Wentelteefjes Kanarie club

The good old French toast, or ‘turning bitches’, as my American cousin calls them, is always a winner. The basic dish comes together quickly, but you can change up the ingredients and toppings to your heart’s content. Take inspiration from the hip birds at Kanarie Club. They decorate their French toast with strawberry compote and fresh strawberries, nuts and a mint leaf – and we add a splash of liqueur to the mixture to make yet another week of corona start a little more enjoyably.

How to make Kanarie Club’s French toast

  • Beat the eggs with the milk and sugar (and add a generous splash of liqueur if desired);
  • Then remove the crusts from the bread and dip the slices in the mixture (not for too long, otherwise the bread will become soft);
  • Heat a knob of butter in the pan and fry the slices one by one over medium heat until lightly browned on both sides. Thick slices should fry for about 4 minutes on each side, thin slices for 2 minutes. Turn them regularly if necessary;
  • Sprinkle with icing sugar/cinnamon or add your favorite toppings.
