“Oh, this dish is so delicious! You use the skin of the onions as a wrapper for a well-seasoned minced meat mixture and dip them in a creamy tomato sauce. It is a combination of Turkish cuisine, where stuffed onions are very popular, and Italian cuisine. Thanks to the tomato sauce, the dish has a delicious Mediterranean flavour and looks a little like lasagne.”

How to make the stuffed onions with minced meat

  • Cut off the top and bottom of the yellow onions, and remove the skin. Cut the onion lengthwise to the middle. Bring water to the boil in a pan. Preheat the oven to 220 ˚C. Boil the onions, covered, for 15 minutes. Drain them afterwards and leave them to cool.
  • For the filling, finely chop the yellow onion. Finely chop the bell pepper and tomato. Also finely chop the flat-leaf parsley, black olives and garlic cloves. Mix the minced meat together with the yellow onion, tomato purée, bell pepper, tomato, parsley, black olives, garlic, olive oil, black pepper, paprika, onion powder, salt and Italian herbs in a deep bowl. Separate the onions layer by layer. Fill the inside of the onion layer with the minced meat mixture, and press the layer closed so that the minced meat is enclosed by onion.
  • For the sauce, bring the water together with the whipping cream and strained tomato sauce to the boil in a frying pan. Add the black pepper, salt and Italian herbs. Stir well, and cook for another 2 to 3 minutes.
  • Pour the sauce into the oven dish, divide the onions over it,  and cover the dish with aluminium foil. Bake the onions for 30 minutes in the oven.
  • Slice the mozzarella. Remove the aluminium foil, and cover the onions with the grated cheese and mozzarella slices. Bake for another 10 minutes in the oven, or until the cheese has melted.
  • Serve the stuffed onions with rice, pasta, potatoes or anything else delicious!
