Relax, it’s just a best-before date

Do you also always throw everything away in a panic on the day the best-before date expires? A study shows that ninety percent of all consumers throw food in the bin out of fear for food safety.

Fortunately, this date has nothing to do with safety; it is merely the producers’ message about how long they think the product tastes its best. Sometimes this is based on consumer testing, but often it is simply a guess.
The result? An enormous amount of food being thrown away, even though it is actually still perfectly edible. So just taste and smell it—you’ll immediately notice if something is no longer safe to eat.
