Restaurant chain Vapiano also bankrupt due to coronavirus
Restaurants and cafés have to close their doors until 20 May 2020. And for more and more (vulnerable) businesses, this means the final blow. The same goes for Vapiano’s Dutch locations.
Restaurant chain Vapiano, which prides itself on “fresh, simple food with Italian influences”, has eleven branches in the Netherlands, including locations in Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague. The German parent company is experiencing financial difficulties, which meant that the Dutch division could no longer meet its financial obligations either. Vapiano was declared bankrupt on Monday.
Bankrupt due to coronavirus
Vapiano’s first location opened in Hamburg in 2002, and it quickly proved to be a success: the concept was rolled out across Europe and other parts of the world. Vapiano also has locations in Australia and South America. The chain cites the coronavirus outbreak as the reason. Things were already not going well for the restaurants, but the measures related to the coronavirus are thought to have been the final blow. It will not be the last restaurant that fails to survive because of coronavirus.
A downright disaster
The fact that the doors of hospitality businesses must remain closed until 20 May is a downright disaster for many hospitality businesses. If the government does not intervene with an emergency plan, two-thirds of hospitality businesses will have to close by 1 July, fears Koninklijke Horeca Nederland (KHN).
