Orders that drive chefs completely crazy, part 2

The 9 orders that drive chefs completely crazy caused quite a stir on our Facebook page. Comments such as: ‘Then you shouldn’t have become a chef’ (and the response: ‘Then you shouldn’t have gone out to eat’) were flying around. But above all: even more horrendous orders that make you see a chef completely losing it during the dinner rush.

Denny thinks chefs’ frustrations are just ‘whining’. The customer is king, he says, so just get on with your work. And Leonie wonders how much effort it really takes to prepare orders the way a customer likes them. But come on, when you read the orders some chefs have to deal with, you do wonder whether they still fall under normal hospitality and professional standards, right? Or as Katja puts it: ‘If you don’t agree with the way the chef prepares it, stay home and cook for yourself.’
Pizza with cheese, please without cheese
Bianca: ‘A regular customer always orders three Margherita pizzas, but all without cheese: one with only shawarma, one with only bell pepper and then another one. I already get annoyed when I see him.’
Meaty steak
Rob: ‘I sent out a steak well done from the kitchen. The server asked: did you enjoy it? No, the steak wasn’t tasty because it tasted like meat.’
Gluten-free, gluten is no problem
Rob gets it in the neck anyway. ‘A guest asks for gluten-free bread with the soup. The server says: the soup is made with a roux, so the soup contains gluten too. Guest: oh, that’s not a problem.’
Not that allergic, or are they?
Celina: ‘It’s strange that people claim to be allergic to lactose, yet still order a latte or cappuccino. Once I warned a woman that there was cheese in the tapenade. She had just taken a bite and quickly spat it out. The next day she called to say that she had become ill. I apologized, but still asked whether it might not have been because of the latte she ordered after her meal.’
Hawaiian toasted sandwich
A classic at Regina’s: ‘A Hawaiian toasted sandwich without pineapple.’ Melanie: ‘I can add this to the list: I’d like the chicken club sandwich, but without the chicken, with extra bacon and not too much sauce.’
Then we’ll sin
Tjolk: ‘Two ladies order a spring roll with fries, but they want them without prawn crackers because they’re vegetarian. Me: “There’s chicken in the spring roll too.” They: “Then we’ll sin just this once.” Honestly…’
A salty word
Rob again: ‘People who immediately sprinkle pepper and salt over their food without tasting a single thing. Or immediately ask for Maggi with their soup (does that still exist?). Taste it first!’
Easy kapsalon
Eric: ‘A group orders kapsalon. Person A doesn’t want cucumber, does want tomato, no iceberg lettuce, but onions, no peppers, but garlic sauce, no sambal. Person B only wants garlic sauce with onions and a little lettuce, definitely not too much. Person C does want garlic sauce and sambal too, only cucumber but not too much, and two tomato wedges. And it went on like that for a while. That’s enough to drive any chef completely crazy.’
