Restaurants with heated terraces

The warm autumn weather is wonderful, but in the evening it can suddenly get very cold. Still want to stay outside? Then you’d better sit on a heated terrace. You can do so at these Amsterdam restaurants.

Mr. Porter
Let’s start with the fanciest terrace of them all. At steakhouse Mr. Porter, you eat on the roof! Take the lift to the rooftop and sink into one of the lounge sofas. Choose a cocktail from the extensive cocktail menu or go straight for an elaborate dinner.
Morgan & Mees
You can always count on classic brunch dishes here – from a croquette on bread to eggs Benedict – but you’re also in for a treat during dinner. The menu is small but perfectly formed, with options such as steak frites, cod or a braised chicken.
Café Vrijdag
As far as we’re concerned, it’s the nicest neighbourhood café in the Rivierenbuurt, because besides being a lovely place to sit (outside), it also serves genuinely delicious food. How about labneh with roasted aubergine, puffed wild rice and chermoula? Otherwise, you can also tuck into a damn good burger here.
Bar Basquiat
Want to stay after dinner and drink lots more beer? Then Bar Basquiat is the place to be. The kitchen at this café in Oost is always temporarily taken over by an external party, and right now that’s Dirty Duck. That means tacos with pulled duck, duck bao buns, Peking duck and Dirty Duck super nachos.
Bar Baarsch
Settle down on the terrace for a beer and perhaps the best nachos in the city. Prefer a full dinner? The menu is wonderfully straightforward: order your meat, your sauce and your side dish, and the feast can begin. The sauces include chipotle mayonnaise, homemade barbecue sauce and pepper-garlic salsa. Mmmm.
Van Rijn
Fancy watching the tourists? Then take a seat at Van Rijn on Rembrandtplein. Inside, you’ll hardly notice that you’re on the busy square, but outside you can enjoy some excellent people-watching. Whether you’re going for beer and bitterballen or a six-course dinner with sea bream, pulpo and veal entrecôte. Once winter has arrived, you’ll have a view of the ice rink, a cup of hot chocolate alongside it, and your winter evening will be complete.
