Russian New Year brought forward because of coronavirus
Russian New Year’s Eve earlier this year? Huh? Although nothing surprises me anymore this year, I still had to blink for a moment. Because of a curfew and being able to drink alcohol, I immediately thought. And that isn’t even so far from reality…
It turns out to be a playful initiative by Michelin-starred Restaurant Vermeer, which is launching a special New Year’s Eve event. Because of the current measures, a Russian New Year’s Eve dinner was chosen, so guests can toast to 2021 as early as 7 p.m. (ha, so I was right after all!)

Because alcohol may no longer be served after 8 p.m., and restaurants must close by 10 p.m., Vermeer has come up with a suitable solution. The restaurant celebrates New Year’s Eve in a Russian time zone. The New Year’s Eve dinner starts in the early afternoon, so guests can toast in time with a glass of vodka or champagne. In part of Russia, the new year has already begun by then.

Chef Chris Naylor: ‘We thought it would be fun to end this bizarre year with an extravagant dinner. And when I say extravagant, I mean: Russian. New Year’s Eve is celebrated in Russia with friends and family around a table laden with delicious food. That is why we are serving an elaborate five-course dinner on New Year’s Eve, of course with vodka and caviar. The traditional salat olovjé (special egg salad) is not missing either. And naturally, there will be plenty of toasts to a fantastic and coronavirus-free 2021.’

The Russian New Year Arrangement can be booked for 199 euros per person, including one night’s accommodation at NH Collection Barbizon Palace on December 31, breakfast on January 1, a five-course dinner, and a glass of vodka and champagne.
