Say what?! You can already buy pepernoten and kruidnoten for Sinterklaas
Is it just me, or are kruidnoten appearing in stores earlier and earlier? While my bikini is still drying, my son casually comes back from the store with a bag of kruidnoten. Isn’t that a little (too) early?
Yes, you read that right: kruidnoten! “Look, the steamboat from Spain is arriving again..,” he (14 years old) cheerfully sings as he puts the bag of kruidnoten on the counter. It seems as though they appear on the shelves earlier every year, but that’s not true. Still, because of this week’s heatwave, it’s a strange idea that this wintry treat is already on sale.
Kruidnoten versus pepernoten
Now that kruidnoten and pepernoten are already on sale again, that one question immediately comes up: what exactly is the difference between the two? Well: pepernoten are those chewy, irregularly shaped chunks that taste somewhat like taaitaai (brilliant name, by the way, because those things are so chewy!) — and which, incidentally, contain no pepper at all. Kruidnoten are those delicious, crunchy, hard little half-spheres — and I’ve already finished another bag of them. Because, as FavorFlav’s Lauretta rightly says: “You can say what you like, but pepernoten in August really are a treat!”
