KFC changes its slogan: isn’t this a bit over the top?
KFC never ceases to amaze us. If it wasn’t with the limited-edition KFC Crocs, then with the very first nuggets made with a 3D printer. Humorous, on trend and innovative — so far, I wholeheartedly applaud KFC’s initiatives. But the latest KFC news has had my eyebrows furrowed intensely for a few minutes now.
Elbow Lickin’ Good
So here’s the thing: KFC is going to stop using the well-known slogan ‘Finger Lickin’ Good’, which has been used for 64 years, for the time being. Not because the nuggets have suddenly stopped being finger-licking good, but because this slogan does not fit with the current coronavirus hygiene measures, according to the American fast-food giant. Now, I’m not one for gnawing on chicken (having been raised by someone who even eats rusks with a knife and fork), but stopping this slogan? I find it bi-zarre. Will it become Elbow Lickin’ Good next?
Incidentally, the slogan Finger Lickin’ Good came about by chance in the late 1950s, when franchisee Dave Harman was eating chicken in a commercial. An angry viewer called to complain that Harman was licking his fingers. The person who answered the phone replied that the food was ‘finger lickin’ good’ after all. The phrase stuck and became one of the most recognisable slogans in the United States.
Keepin’ it real
Are we also going to remove all kissing scenes from films? Only show images of people wearing face masks? To get us all used to a world that is slowly becoming insane, but is referred to as ‘the new normal?’ Keep it real, people! Licking your fingers, literally and figuratively, is wonderful! What I find really strange is waving your hands, chronically disinfected or not, next to your ear to indicate that something tastes good. Maybe we should stop doing that. And not because we have to, but simply because it’s very strange.
