Several supermarkets recall frozen spinach: contains metal particles
Check whether there’s a pack of frozen spinach from Albert Heijn, Lidl, PLUS or the G’woon private label in your freezer. You may need to return it to the store. Why? Because it may contain metal particles. This could ‘possibly pose a health risk’, according to the supermarkets’ websites.
Not exactly appetizing, then. Besides, we already get enough iron from a portion of spinach, so as far as we’re concerned, those extra metal particles are completely unnecessary.
Thin metal splinters in spinach
You may not need to panic immediately. The recall concerns specific portions of frozen spinach. Lidl is recalling Freshona private-label chopped spinach portions (800 grams) with an expiry date of 02-2026. At Albert Heijn, it concerns AH Finely Chopped Spinach (450 grams) with an expiry date of 31-01-2026. PLUS refers to Vriesvers spinach (800 grams) with an expiry date of 02-2026, while the G’woon private label concerns spinach portions (800 grams) with an expiry date of 02-2026.
It is unclear how those ‘thin metal splinters’—as Lidl calls them on its website—ended up in the spinach portions. By the way, I don’t know what is worse: spinach with metal particles or spinach with a poop bacterium. The latter happened at supermarket chain Jumbo some time ago.
Return it = get your purchase price back
By the way, you don’t need to come up with an ironclad story if you want to return your purchase to the stores. Simply take the product back to the relevant store, and you will at least get the purchase price refunded. Did you buy your portion of frozen spinach online from Albert Heijn? Then the supermarket asks you to fill in a form.
