Shopping at farms in the city: here’s how

ouderwetse melkkar

Want to buy butter, cheese and eggs as locally as possible? That’s quite difficult if you live in the city. Fortunately, Samuel Levie has some addresses for farms around Amsterdam where you can go.

Milkman More than Milk Amsterdam (MOMA)

“Marten Verdenius has brought the milkman back to the streets of Amsterdam. He gets the milk from the organic farm De Groene Griffioen in Weesp, a lovely dairy farm where you can also buy really delicious cheese.”

Riddammerhoeve

“Through Brandt & Levie, I’m of course lucky enough to have my own butcher shop where I can get beautiful meat. But I also like going to the Riddammerhoeve goat farm in the Amsterdamse Bos for goat meat.”

De Lindenhof

“It may be a bit obvious, but it really is a wonderful place. The quality is very high, they have a wide range and the finest meat, which also comes from their own farm.”

Buy a deer

“First there was the Buy a Cow initiative, and now there’s also Buy a Deer. The deer come from the Oostvaardersplassen and would have been shot anyway. It’s good meat and you can simply order it online.”

Woord vis

“Jan Woord is a fishmonger from Urk. He is continuing what used to be buurvissen. He supplies a few restaurants; home chefs can send him a WhatsApp message to order fish too, pay via a payment request and collect their fresh fish from the fish auction at one of those restaurants.”

Zuidermarkt

“Not a farm, but Zuidermarkt is a very small market in Amsterdam-Zuid and a lovely place to do your shopping. They have beautiful organic vegetables and everything is very affordable.

Noordermarkt

“Noordermarkt is better known and perhaps a bit obvious, but it has a lovely vegetable stall and good bakers. Jan and Barabara van ’t Ailand are also there with their fish, by the way.”
