The fridge is a tricky phenomenon. How long can you actually keep your food in it? What belongs in that dreaded fridge door and what doesn’t? And can you put hot food in it or not? If it also starts to smell, you’re really tearing your hair out. What on earth is making that smell and, more importantly, how do you get rid of it? Believe me, you’re not the only one struggling with a smelly fridge. That’s why there are plenty of tricks that make unpleasant odors disappear like snow in the sun. We thought this one with barbecue charcoal was worth sharing.

Charcoal in your fridge

The tip comes from Babs Costello, a true homemaking queen who shares all her ingenious tips on TikTok. According to her, barbecue charcoal—you know, those little black pieces of charcoal—is all you need if you want to get rid of a smelly fridge. The porous surface of the charcoal means that it can absorb odors extremely well. More importantly, it holds on to them. That’s exactly why those foul smells disappear! What should you do? Fill a glass bowl with some barbecue charcoal and put it in your fridge. That’s it.

@brunchwithbabs Did your Mother ever tell you that you can do a lot more with charcoal than just grill? Charcoal is my go-to for moisture and odor issues all over the house. Cheap, easy and you probably have it on hand – especially this time of year! 👃🏼If your fridge is not smelling so great, a little bowl filled with charcoal is just the answer. The charcoal’s surface area is filled with millions of micro pockets and pores which just suck that odor right in and trap it. ☔️Is it a little damp in the bathroom or underneath the sink? Fill a disposal container with charcoal, puncture some holes in the top and place in those moist areas. Those millions of little pores are soaking all that moisture right in. 🧦If your home is full of pets or children, consider putting the charcoal in a sock and hang it in a closet or basement that needs some moisture or odor elimination. 💐Want your flowers to last for days on end? Just drop a couple small chunks of charcoal into your vase. The charcoal acts as a filter to keep the water clear of contaminants like chlorine, which speeds up wilting. #charcoal #grilling #hometips ♬ original sound – everyone’s grandmother

No more moisture

A smelly fridge isn’t the only thing barbecue charcoal is a miracle cure for. If you also have problems with moisture in your home—in your kitchen, for example—charcoal is all you need. Take an old jar with a lid and poke a few holes in the lid. Put some barbecue charcoal in it and close the lid again. The charcoal absorbs the moisture, causing damp spots to disappear quickly. I say: go and get that big bag of charcoal out of the shed again. You don’t only need it for tonight’s barbecue!
