Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his life, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. This time, Snackspert is lyrical about Friethuys M E T in Almere: ‘this is one of the best snack bars in the Netherlands.’

People often joke that Almere has little to offer, but what if I told you that the city might have one of the better snack bars in the country? That’s right, I’m getting straight to the point. But it’s simple: Friethuys M E T at least dares to innovate. Finally, trying new things—I love it. It’s a bit like Frans Bauer suddenly making metal music, and it still sounds amazing. Take the snack on the left, for example: the Bali frikandel. A butcher’s frikandel (I’ll come back to that) with satay sauce, samurai sauce, fried onions, and red cabbage atjar. Unreal! Why go for speciaal when you can also choose a little heat? The sauce is deliciously creamy, but also spicy, while still having the lovely qualities of the satay sauce. And then there’s the sourness of the atjar. Brilliant. It’s just a shame that the frikandel itself is very tough on the outside, making it a real workout to cut into. Almost perfect, then. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½

Because yes, the one in the middle is the regular butcher’s frikandel, which has received a sort of bukka—eh, let’s not say it. As I said earlier: a delicious frikandel, but the crust is too hard. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

And then the last one: the fries with cheese and onion rings. Just looking at it is fattening, but it’s all worth it. The mini kaassoufflé is fried excellently, the kaastengel with Old Amsterdam cheese is nicely salty, and the onion rings are absolutely spot-on. The fries themselves are also fried superbly and covered with Cajun spices—wonderful! It’s difficult for me to be critical here; the only thing I can think of is that the ratio of onion rings to kaastengel to kaassoufflé is a little unbalanced. A few fewer rings, and a little more cheese, please. But really, that’s the only thing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½
