Snackspert is lyrical about the croissants from Fort Negen in Amsterdam

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his life, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. This week he ate the best croissants ever, and the pitacorn also turned out to be a great success.

Croissants from Fort Negen, Amsterdam
I’d like to talk about Fort Negen, a bakery on Jan Evertsenstraat in Amsterdam. They have taken the croissant to a higher level—such a high level that I’m even considering promoting croissants from the category of bakery roll to high-end bakery snack. Yes, strange times, but what Fort Negen does every weekend is insane. Besides the many sweet weekend specials (cruffins and various cookies), they also make savory specials, including filled croissants. In the first photo, you can see a croissant with, among other things, roasted pumpkin, goat cheese, and thyme. In the second photo, you can see my favorite: a Japanese omelet with sriracha mayo and spring onion. These are all things you haven’t tasted before, and it’s incredible. That’s why I recommend checking out Fort Negen’s weekend specials every time you’re in Amsterdam for a weekend (or even just briefly)—in my opinion, they’re the best in the city, if not the country. Croissants of such a high level that even the Empire State Building looks up. Or something. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

💰: varies, but usually around 4 euros. It’s genuinely much more filling than a regular croissant
Pitacorn from Snackbar van Vliet, Amsterdam

Snack bar owners, pay attention: a pita with a kipcorn is seriously a hit. The pitacorn. You should make it too. Snackbar van Vliet in Amsterdam Osdorp sells one with their homemade ‘sevensauce’. What is that? The recipe is secret, but honestly, it’s the sweet version of whiskey cocktail sauce. With a little paprika in it. It may not look like much, but sometimes even the ugliest trees are allowed to remain standing. Because the crazy thing is that this tastes incredibly good. I never would have expected this combination, but it works like a well-oiled machine. The downside is that the kipcorn itself feels a little dry inside, but luckily Van Vliet is generous with the sauce. And yes, if you’re generous with sauce, you even earn the pope’s respect. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Fish balls from IKEA

I didn’t know this: apparently, besides meatballs, vegetable balls, and vegan balls, IKEA also has fish balls! Well, then my slipto—uh, tongue starts tingling faster, because in general I’m quite enthusiastic about those IKEA balls. This HUVUDROLL version consists of cod and salmon. The crispy coating is good, and fortunately the flavor inside is nicely balanced (an overpowering salmon flavor seems difficult in such a little ball), but I find the texture a bit disappointing. It falls apart so easily, as if it were cotton candy. So soft. I do understand it, because fish is normally very soft inside, but a little more binder would have created a more pleasant mouthfeel. Still, in terms of flavor, they’re fine. Adequate, then. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
