Snackspert is lyrical: Wendy’s fries with satay and samurai sauce are truly brilliant

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his life, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. Here’s how many stars he gives Wendy’s fries and Like Meat’s ‘chicken’ burger this week.

Wendy’s fries with satay and samurai sauce, Goes

Pay close attention now: this is a piece of snack history. The Wendy’s snack bar in Goes is the snack bar that has managed to keep Wendy’s from America outside Europe for years and years. Because, yes, trademark rights. And an American giant like that wants to get rid of the snack bar, but the judge decided that Wendy’s in Goes has every right to exist. A bit of a David vs. Goliath story, which I secretly find absolutely wonderful. Because yes, the American Wendy’s is certainly tasty, but this story of the little snack bar versus big money is even tastier. And to make a segue into tasty things: the fries with satay and samurai sauce are truly brilliant. What a fantastic combination, perhaps even tastier than oorlog fries with onions. I don’t miss the sharpness of the onion, partly thanks to the spicy tingling in your mouth from the samurai sauce. The ratio could be a little better, but you could probably already see that for yourself. The fries were very nicely crisp, could have used a little more salt, but that’s all. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Idea: we should cherish snack bars like Wendy’s in Goes. Hard-working snack bar owners in the Netherlands deserve a lot of respect, especially when they manage to hold off such a huge American giant. That’s why I’d like to suggest something: Wendy’s in Goes has a not-so-good rating on Google, partly because of fake reviews from angry people who want the American Wendy’s. Let’s boost their Google rating by giving them as many stars as possible. They don’t deserve the negative fake reviews, so we should counterattack with positive fake reviews. So be it. Let’s go!

The Like Chicken Burger by Like Meat

One thing I’ve noticed lately in the supermarket: most new snack products are usually vegetarian or vegan. Are we in a period of testing out different vegetarian products and seeing which ones survive, so that supermarkets can then focus on improving the variety again? Who knows. Until then, we have to make do with lots of new vegetarian and vegan snacks. Which isn’t a problem, because if you pick up the Like Chicken Burger, for example, you can fry up a more than decent little burger at home that would even make the biggest carnivore say: ‘Hey, isn’t this just real chicken?’ And I know, most fake-chicken products in supermarkets simply resemble standard chicken snacks, so it’s not all that difficult. You can’t get really good chicken at the supermarket, that’s pretty well known by now, right? But still, it’s nice to have this fake-chicken burger. Personally, I like it a little better than the one from the Vegetarian Butcher, because this one is considerably juicier and crispier. And another great thing is that it’s pre-fried. That’s always the case with the better chicken burgers. A successful product, then! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Gyoza, nuggets and ramen from Otemba, Amsterdam

I’m all for it. Sacrilege is permissible in some cases. David Chang said in the Netflix series Ugly Delicious (a viewing tip!) that nobody should really complain about strange combinations, because what if they simply taste good? And lots of dishes have at some point been influenced by other cultures, so we should actually celebrate that. Right, enough said; now I can finally talk about the gyoza with Old Amsterdam cheese (see top left) from Otemba in Amsterdam. A brilliant combination, especially tasty with the langoustine inside. The sweet-and-sour filling combined with the saltiness of the cheese. Really delicious. The deep-fried chicken thighs with herring roe are simply good, although I don’t think the roe adds much value. Perhaps they should think of something more acidic to go with it. Finally, on the right you can see the octopus balls, which are absolutely fantastic. Normally I find them so soft that they give me an eerie feeling, but here they are very flavourful. Chapeau. Oh, and the ramen was tasty too, though the bowls were a little small, that’s all. Although I don’t know all that much about ramen, but anyway. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
