Snackspert: this is one of the better fries in Amsterdam

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,500 burgers in his lifetime, suspects there is more mayonnaise in his body than blood, AND shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav. This week, Snackspert wants something more sparkling in his mouth than Albert Heijn’s risotto balls, such as Doardi’s fries with mayo.

Fries with mayo from Doardi, Amsterdam

Well hey, these are thicker blobs than the ones you normally see at the end of an average nature documentary. As they should be! These fries with plenty of delicious mayo come from Doardi in Amsterdam, located near Westerpark. And wow, this is a banger. The nice thing about reviewing fries is that after just a few bites, you already know exactly how good or bad they are. In this case, these are among the better ones in Amsterdam. Not quite as good as Zwagers in Amsterdam-West, but in my opinion, these definitely make the top three. Why, exactly? They’re crunchy, but slightly soft on the inside. Not too soft, so the potato flavor is still excellently preserved. And another great thing about this place is its extensive selection of sauces, especially mayo; you can get fritessaus, Belgian mayo, Zaanse mayo, truffle mayo, sriracha mayo, and so on. Very classy, very classy—that deserves an extra half star. Love a large sauce selection. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½

Risotto balls from Albert Heijn

And yet another product that Albert Heijn probably recently spotted at a competitor: Dr. Oetker released pizza bitterballen last year, which were actually a kind of disguised form of risotto balls. Now they’ve come out with their own risotto balls, and yes, mozzarella and tomato is a combination that works just as well as a beer cap and a bottle opener. It simply goes well together. That’s also my main criticism here, because of all the new snacks Albert Heijn currently has in its range, this is immediately the most boring. It’s like an average episode of a certain talk show, where, after two days of temperatures at -2 degrees Celsius, they discuss the legendary skating race—the Elfstedentocht—with Erben Wennemars: completely predictable. It’s a perfectly decent snack, that’s for sure, but wow, I want something more sparkling in my mouth. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pizzas from Bæst, Copenhagen
There’s one thing you simply have to do (and I hate things you ‘have’ to do, but hey, let me be a hypocrite for a moment) when you’re in Copenhagen, and that’s go to Bæst. You may know it from the Netflix series Ugly Delicious, where hero @davidchang visited the place and was just as impressed. And if you’re there without children, you can go for a multi-course menu that also includes various slices of pizza. What makes this place so special? Because it’s NEW. New in terms of flavor, new in terms of the pizza experience, new in terms of being surprised. The homemade mozzarella (smoked or unsmoked) is a delight for the stomach. The pizza with oyster mushrooms, pine nut purée and garlic is like an unknown football tactic that makes every opponent bite the dust. You have no idea what’s happening to you. The oyster mushrooms are raw, but seem to have been cooked like a true ceviche; the acidity you taste is addictive. The other pizza, one with Danish sausage, smoked mozzarella, pecorino romano and Brussels sprouts, is also insanely delicious. I didn’t miss the tomato sauce for a moment, and for a lover like me, that’s a big deal. Impressive. And that dough, too—it’s so delicious, so soft that it could be a pillow King Willem-Alexander sleeps on. This place is unique. Therefore, in a rare exception: this is a must. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
