Snackspert’s week: ‘You simply don’t want dry meat in your mouth’

Eke Bosman, better known as Instagram phenomenon @snackspert, ate his first frikandel as a baby, hates vlammetjes, has devoured at least 1,000 burgers in his life, suspects there is more mayonnaise than blood in his body, and shares his best and worst snack reviews on FavorFlav every other week.

Better than pleasure
Dumplings from Dumplings

A ticket to China costs more than 500 euros, so yes, it’s a good thing that we have so many Chinese restaurants in the Netherlands. But the really good Chinese places are hard to find. Luckily, I’m not above recommending a really good Chinese snack bar, because Dumplings on the Nassaukade in Amsterdam is an oasis of pleasure. Never before had I eaten such good baozi (baobao on the menu), filled with pork. The crêpes with duck reminded me of the warmth of an embrace, but the real gem is the dumpling itself. I went for the fried version, and honestly: you don’t often taste such deep flavour. Sometimes you know after just one bite that a flavour has several layers. This one does. The kind that makes you take another bite to define the flavour. Tender meat, delicious Eastern spices, and so on. They say Chinese Huawei is a danger to society, but the dishes at Chinese Dumplings may spy on my stomach any time of day. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Pizza Diavola from Dr. Oetker

There haven’t been many truly new products in supermarket freezer aisles lately, and that’s a shame. Luckily, I hadn’t tried Dr. Oetker’s Diavola pizza yet, even though it has been available for more than half a year now at places such as Albert Heijn. My great role model @davidchang once said: I love real Italian pizzas, but sometimes I’m simply craving a really disgusting one. And that’s a remarkable phenomenon, because when you’re sober, you’ll never be able to win over a girl/boy you don’t actually find attractive at all. Apparently, frozen pizzas are different, and that’s a good thing. You can basically see the Diavola as a spicy version of the pepperoni pizza… easily explained by those jalapeños on the pizza, too. But hey, it’s genuinely tasty. Crispy thin base, plenty of tomato sauce on top, nice and spicy—Aunt Truus, with her fiery hairstyle, won’t know what to say to that. HA! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Chicken shawarma pizza from Spar

Do you know that feeling when you go to the supermarket to get a particular snack, but once you’re there, that specific snack isn’t on the shelves? Say Mitchell from 4HAVO goes to Plus to get a frikandel roll and an energy drink, only to find out that they’ve run out of frikandel rolls. You understand that Mitchell is angry, right? That’s more or less how I felt when I went to Spar to get a mexicano roll(!), but they didn’t have any. So I went for something else: this chicken shawarma pizza. Okay, okay, sounds good, but unfortunately it was quite disappointing. The chicken on the pizza is warm but just as dry as an average porn star who has retired. The shawarma spices are there—you can taste them—but you simply don’t want dry meat in your mouth. So I can actually conclude pretty quickly: don’t. ⭐️⭐️
