Souvenir hunting #3

paellasaffraan

At home, we rarely count a trip to the supermarket among the highlights of the day. But abroad, at least one supermarket visit is planned in the hunt for edible souvenirs to take home. What shouldn’t you miss from each country? FavorFlav browses the shelves.

Today, we return from Spain with:

Saffron

Real saffron is expensive. And rightly so, because harvesting and drying the stigmas of the saffron crocus is labor-intensive. But we wouldn’t be Dutch if we didn’t hunt for bargains even while on holiday. So seize your chance. The essential ingredient in paella is cheaper in the country where it is produced, Spain, than it is here. And fresher.

Manchego + membrillo

There are countless fantastic Spanish cheeses. And you can buy many good ones here too. But no cheese gives us a greater holiday feeling than Manchego sheep’s cheese from La Mancha. With its dark herringbone pattern and ivory interior, it is firm in texture and flavor. That firmness is perfectly softened by its constant companion, membrillo, quince jelly. Throw that into your supermarket cart too.

Packets of flan (or crema) Catalan

No dinner in Catalonia is complete without ending with the typical caramel pudding flan (or crema) Catalan. And even though making it is no rocket science, even the Catalans often opt for ready-made packets. So why shouldn’t we? Don’t forget to grab those typical earthenware flan dishes too.
