Special hospitality concept: Supernova in Rotterdam

I’m often asked: “What are truly cool hospitality concepts?” Here’s my answer! Every week, I take you to the most remarkable restaurants, bars and hotels at home and abroad. Today: the super-cool Supernova hotel in Rotterdam, which was named Best Hotel Design 2019 last week.

Rotterdam is booming! The brand-new Supernova hotel proves it once again. Supernova has 38 rooms, a restaurant, bar, mini-shop, library and garden (with a fan-tas-tic sculpture!). And last week, during the Entree Awards ceremony, it won the Best Hotel Design 2019! category. In this new hotspot, Rotterdam culture can be seen, felt, heard and tasted down to the finest details—for hotel guests and Rotterdammers alike!

Rotterdam cocktails and chefs
The bartenders from Rotterdam’s cocktail bar Dr., for example, created the cocktail menu for Supper bar/restaurant and developed bottled cocktails, so guests can also enjoy a good cocktail in their room. Vinyl evenings are also organised with Rotterdam radio station Operator Radio. The art in the rooms is primarily by Rotterdam artists, and during chef invites, Rotterdam chefs (such as those from the fantastic restaurant Heroine in Rotterdam) cook in the restaurant. Other Rotterdam products in the shop/restaurant include pastries from Sharp Sharp, coffee from Giraffe and bar bites from Indonesia. In short: Supernova is an extension of the city!

Supernova as a brand
Then there’s the super-cool design, in which Supernova is very cleverly presented as a brand by Containr Affairs. The Supernova branding has been executed exceptionally well, including in the fire-red floors in the corridors, the lighting in the lobby, staff clothing, bed linen and bodycare products. Oh, and have I mentioned the Supernova champagne? Everything is subtle and elegant, never over the top.

Color blocking
Another striking feature is the attention to color blocking throughout the hotel: every space has its own color and reflects the colorful Kruiskade with its many cultures. The fire-red corridors are also highly successful: a reference to the red-light district with all its (former) sex clubs.

Pride in the city
All in all, the design is highly surprising—truly something different—and that is mainly thanks to the color blocking and the excellent, super-cool branding. And with all the Rotterdam products and events, owners Jan-Maarten de Reus and Glenn Severin clearly take pride in ‘their’ Rotterdam!
