A life without Nutella: can you imagine a worse nightmare? I can’t. But a real Nutella crisis is apparently looming, so you’d better stock up on a few jars soon. Panic!

Breathe in, breathe out… We’re going to explain step by step what’s going on with the production of your favorite spread (or the stuff you eat by the spoonful—we’re not judging).

Unaffordable nut

It’s all about the financial crisis in Turkey. Due to the lira’s gigantic inflation, hazelnut farmers—who produce around 70 percent of the world’s hazelnuts—are finding it increasingly difficult to keep nut production going. Products needed to grow the hazelnuts have risen so sharply in price that they have become unaffordable for many farmers.

Crying

And Turkey just happens to be the number-one supplier to chocolate company Ferrero, which makes Nutella, among other products. The situation is even so serious that people are saying the world is on the verge of a hazelnut shortage. Besides Nutella, brands such as Kinder Bueno will also feel the setback considerably. Crying, crying.

But there is hope. Meanwhile, the Turkish president is trying to keep things under control and slow the lira’s inflation. Fingers crossed that he succeeds and that we can continue spreading Nutella on our sandwiches without a care in the world. To be continued.
