Blue cheese with Nutella: disgusting or golden?

No lunch is complete without a sandwich generously spread with Nutella. And whether it’s the white or brown variety, the Italian hazelnut spread is my number-one sandwich topping. But apparently that Nutella sandwich has been missing something all this time, at least according to this chef, and that is… blue cheese?!

Blue cheese and Nutella: it’s not exactly a combination you think of when you take that jar out of the cupboard, is it? Chocolate and blue cheese are said to taste good together, but it never occurred to me to spread the two together on a sandwich. But there is one chef who has sworn by it for years, and that is none other than Dominique Crenn.
Dominique can be seen in the second season of Chef’s Table and is the only female chef in America to earn three stars with her restaurant Atelier Crenn. No small achievement!
How to make a Nutella and blue cheese sandwich
A blue cheese/Nutella sandwich is, of course, not simply a matter of spreading a layer of one on top of a layer of the other. No, the Michelin-starred chef says the combination tastes best on warm brioche bread. To make the sandwich, first spread the blue cheese on one half of a warm piece of brioche bread and the Nutella on the other half. Then press the two halves together and place the sandwich under the grill for a few minutes. Dominique is a French lady and therefore swears by Roquefort as her blue cheese, but an English Stilton will surely work too.
Match made in heaven?
Time to try the promising combination for myself, and, to put it mildly, it was quite disappointing. Okay, I admit it: instead of freshly baked brioche bread, I spread the two on a kaiser roll. But aside from that, blue cheese together with Nutella isn’t really delicious in my opinion.
It isn’t disgusting either, but because blue cheese has quite an intense flavor and the hazelnut spread isn’t exactly light, it’s a pretty heavy combination all in all. I’d rather eat the two separately, but do try it yourself, because tastes differ after all. Who knows, perhaps for you, just as for top chef Dominique, it really will be a heavenly combination!
