Study says: 73% of men would rather die 10 years earlier than give up meat

As part of ‘No Meat May’, several studies have been conducted, including one on Australian men and their need for meat. The result: a large majority of the men in the study would rather die earlier than have to miss their burger. Remarkable! What’s the deal?

Let me start by saying that I’m not a vegetarian. I have been, though. I kept it up for two years. It may sound a little gloomy, but since I also don’t eat fish or shellfish (thanks, allergy) and my life as a vegetarian was almost twenty years ago—so there weren’t really any good alternatives—I genuinely found it difficult not to eat meat. When I also developed anemia, my meat-free existence came to an abrupt end. And oooh, that moment when I sank my teeth into a burger again…

These days I eat less meat and shop more consciously. But giving up meat would be truly hard for me.

Australian men choose meat

A study conducted among 1,000 men was crystal clear: they can’t live without meat. 73% of this group said they would rather die 10 years earlier than ever give up meat. The steak love is real! The study was published on the American website Vegan Food & Living, so you can imagine they weren’t exactly thrilled with the result.

But the website thinks it has found the reason why men don’t want to give up meat.

“Eating meat is too masculine to give up”

According to the site, it is supposedly ‘clear’ that their masculinity is at the heart of the problem. “Australian men are still being fed a lie that meat-eating makes them more masculine, when in reality, what’s more masculine than protecting the planet?” says No Meat May founder Ryan Alexander.

Now, I have exactly zero Australian men in my circle of friends, but I do think this conclusion is rather simplistic. There’s nothing masculine about choosing a chunk of meat at the butcher’s or tossing a plastic tray of bargain meat into your shopping cart at the supermarket. Let alone that eating it makes you more of a man. I’d sooner say that—strange assumption perhaps—they simply find meat incredibly delicious in Australia? I can relate to that explanation more than Mr. Alexander’s, to be honest. Because let’s be honest: really good meat, prepared really well… isn’t that irresistible too?

Bell peppers for your potency

And did you know that a plant-based diet has a huge effect on potency? The documentary Game Changers revealed that with a diet without animal ingredients, erections were bigger, better and more frequent. For one test subject, it was even 400 (!) percent bigger. Oh, if only those Australian men knew!
