Sunflower oil to disappear from supermarket shelves in four weeks
It won’t be long before the shelves stocked with sunflower oil are empty. According to the food industry, a serious problem that will become reality in four to six weeks. And it won’t just be bottles of sunflower oil that will no longer be available; the ingredients in these products will also change due to the shortage.
The oil shortage is caused by the war in Ukraine. Like grain, the country is a major producer of vegetable oils such as sunflower oil. Producers are now urgently looking for an alternative so they can continue producing their products. Because besides being sold in bottles, sunflower oil is also used, for example, to fry chips, and is found in biscuits and margarine.
Rapeseed oil
Instead of sunflower oil, your favorite chips may soon be fried in rapeseed oil, linseed oil or palm oil. But switching to alternative oils costs money, because, for example, the packaging will have to be adapted. As a result, it could soon be impossible to buy those bags of plain chips for less than one euro; that price will most likely rise as well.
