Why Cooking with Weed Oil Is a Terrible Idea

This article was originally titled “Cooking with CBD Oil: The Do’s and Don’ts.” After using the oil itself for a week and a half as research for this piece, I’m happily changing the title to “Cooking with CBD Oil: Don’t!” No, I’m not a fan. And this is why.

CBD oil explained briefly

CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that can be isolated from hemp, also known as cannabis. Nickname: weed oil. Unlike THC oil, CBD oil doesn’t get you incredibly high or groggy, but according to many people, it does provide inner peace. We could certainly use that these days! It also has a whole list of positive effects: it is supposedly good for the respiratory system, supports the immune system, is good for your joints, promotes concentration and contributes to good mental balance.

Again, very welcome effects—in these corona times, even more so than usual. What’s more, it’s 100% natural, legal and therefore readily available at the drugstore.

Disgusting

At the drugstore, I bought two types of CBD oil: one with 2.75% CBD and one with 5% CBD; if I liked it, I could gradually increase my dose. On the first day, I dripped several drops into a bowl of quark with fruit for myself and my boyfriend.

Instant regret! CBD oil, as quickly became clear, is extremely disgusting. As if the piece of banana I was chewing on were a piece of weed—not tasty. My boyfriend described it as ‘wet cardboard that had been sitting in a corner of a weed plantation for too long’. Foul! “We’ll get used to it,” we thought, but after ruining a number of breakfasts, sandwiches and dinners (yes, you can still taste the overpowering weed flavor even if you cook it into something), we soon decided to drip the oil under our tongues a few times a day. Still mega disgusting, but hey; at least we weren’t ruining any meals—the horror of every foodie, right?

Panic

We dutifully took our drops, and I couldn’t wait for complete calm to descend upon my body and mind. After just a few days, I felt something—namely… exactly the opposite! Instead of calm and healthy feelings, I started experiencing a lot of negative stimuli. I became irritated quickly, argued with my boyfriend more often than average and constantly felt on the verge of wanting to burst into tears. As if my period were about to start after not having had one for 10 years, but no; I didn’t need to get my period. I thought it would pass, but when I burst into tears while doing the dishes after brunch with friends, I knew for sure: that CBD had to leave my life.

Different for everyone

I’ve read enough articles and watched enough YouTube reviews to believe that there are many people who have had a positive experience. People with joint problems who benefit greatly from it, as well as people who become mentally stronger because of it. Unfortunately, the miracle oil didn’t work for me. I’ll just stick to eating, drinking and occasionally smoking a joint. That really does make me happier.
