I Ate a Weed Burger and This Is What I Thought of It

Wietburger

After the edible joint and the weedewiet sauce, there is now a real weed burger on the market. High time for FavorFlav’s Laura to try food containing cannabis. Without THC, it had better be really tasty.

A weed burger, then. The very first time in my life that I would eat weed—I’ve never eaten space cake, after all. I had absolutely no idea what to expect. I do like burgers with a twist, but weed is definitely next level. So I went to Ter Marsch & Co in Amsterdam to try the burger. Since I was there anyway, I immediately ordered fries with weedewiet sauce as well.

A Joke That Got Out of Hand

The burger, like the weedewiet sauce, was developed by chef Olaf Oldenburg and baker Edwin Klaasen of Ter Marsch & Co. The sauce had already been around for some time and originated as a joke that got out of hand. The men at Ter Marsch were curious to see how it would taste, and it turned out to be ‘pretty good’. Because the sauce tasted good, they went for the weed burger too. Not with weed leaves mixed into the meat or leaves of weed lettuce, but with a bun containing weed.

I can understand why the sauce left them wanting more. It’s a kind of lemon mayonnaise with a distinctive accent. Fresh and sour, with that strange flavor of weed. That weed flavor also returned in the bun, which was green as well, by the way. Still, I was less impressed by that. Weed dries things out, and the same goes for bread. They added some extra milk, but it didn’t really help.

Despite the Weed

As a result, the weed burger wasn’t an outright flop. It was topped with wonderfully tender meat, thick slices of Iberico bacon and plenty of sauce, so the whole thing was still nice and juicy. The burger was quite tasty, but more in spite of the weed than thanks to it. Although it’s pretty funny to try a weed burger once, next time I’d rather order one of Ter Marsch & Co’s award-winning burgers.
