Super-smart students discover the ultimate burrito hack
They spent months working on it, but the result is impressive: a group of students developed a kind of tape that you can use to seal burritos. No more taking one bite and ending up with all the filling on your trousers, no: this edible tape keeps your wrap or soft tortilla nicely closed.
Students regularly have to set up a small business or develop a product as part of their studies, and usually it’s complete nonsense. But this group of four female engineering students from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, United States, shows that it can actually be useful. They came up with edible tape that you can use to seal your burrito before it goes into the oven. The tape keeps the little package of filling neatly closed, even when you’re eating. Further research showed that the tape also works well on pita breads and naans, so the possibilities for the tape are endless.
Thorough research
It was quite a search for Tyler, Rachel, Marie and Erin. They began with a thorough study of regular tape. It consists of two components: a plastic film and a sticky layer. Aha! The team then divided up the work: two students searched for a good adhesive layer for the edible tape, while the other two looked for something that could serve as the film. ‘It was a matter of trying things out. We just kept testing, improving and testing again with different ingredients and preparation methods. That took us several months. We wanted the tape to be invisible and barely noticeable in taste.’
Prototype
Tyler came up with the name, Tastee Tape (extra point for Tyler), and the prototype consists of pieces of edible tape on a kind of greaseproof paper, similar to stickers. The women are now trying to obtain a patent for their invention. They presented their invention at school, easily won the competition for developing the best product, and now want to develop Tastee Tape further to see whether it can become a truly profitable business. We can definitely see its potential: neatly sealing a wrap, but a grilled cheese sandwich can now be locked up properly too, and ordinary sandwiches stay neatly together in the lunchbox. Bring on that Tastee Tape, ladies!
