Supermarket staff on the worst hoarding behavior they saw

If there is a group—besides healthcare workers—that deserves a round of applause, it is supermarket employees. Man, they have been through a lot lately. Some of it fun, some of it less so. We were curious about their stories, so we asked them a few questions. This time: what is the worst hoarding behavior you have seen?

Stealing

“A woman who, furious about the lack of toilet paper, stormed into our customer restroom to grab a roll. You wouldn’t believe it, would you?”

Taking it before it’s even stocked

“Long-life milk and toilet paper. Those are the two things that are constantly sold out. When a colleague was wheeling a cart full of toilet paper toward the right aisle to restock it, a woman took everything off the—still moving—cart. Bizarre.”

Everything gone

“At one point, the entire supermarket was empty. I understand thinking, ‘A crisis is coming, let me stock up on some pasta and canned food,’ but bananas? Cold cuts? Everything was really gone. We don’t all have such a big freezer, do we? It mainly shows what people are like: take what you can get, because everyone else is doing it too.”

Running, falling, hoarding

“I literally saw people running through the store to get their hands on certain products. Some people even fell over one another.”

Total denial

“People who fill their entire shopping cart with nothing but jarred vegetables, pasta and toilet paper, and then casually claim that those are simply their weekly groceries and that hoarding is ridiculous. Right.”
