How Corona Turned Me into a Booze Hound

Adeline loves food, lots of it and often, both at home and out. Usually that goes well, but sometimes it doesn’t. In the series Sunday Roast, she shares her curiosities. This week, about her wild craving for wine.

I solemnly promise you that I took a photo of an empty shelf of Tilia Chardonnay at Albert Heijn and sent it to my colleagues with the message: my God, no. The woman standing one and a half meters away from me gave me a slightly sideways look when I did this. Apparently, the entire world had the same (what I personally think is excellent) idea as I did: soften staying at home with a thick, creamy layer of full-bodied wine. But apparently I had to go down dry.

Bottom in sight

Rhythm, rhythm, rhythm, the professionals chant. We have to exercise, we have to get up early, but then it’s better to leave the bottle alone. Oh, how unsociable.

I’m clinging like a madwoman to my normal day; I even simulate my commute in the morning by walking for about forty-five minutes, but at half past five all I want to reward myself with is FaceTime and a good glass of wine. What else can you do now?

I’m getting dangerously close to expert status in supermarket wine. Should I be worried?

A mad dash to the bottle bank

It doesn’t happen during breakfast or after my coffee, rest assured, but I am slowly turning into a stay-at-home boozer and quarantine drinker. Around five o’clock, I’ll message to ask whether I’m the only one, which, incidentally, is never the case. And it’s entirely possible that I already thought it was an excellent plan at four. A colleague thought it would be funny if I saved up my quarantine bottles. I didn’t, so in shock I made a mad dash to the bottle bank to conceal the obvious evidence of quarantine. Now, by the way, all my neighbors think we live upstairs as a family of ten over the age of eighteen.

Licor Quarantine Y Tres

Last night, my boyfriend called out from the kitchen, as delighted as a child, that he had spotted another gift bottle of Limoncello in the depths of the fridge. We almost danced on the table. This was after a substantial bottle of Tohu and before another glass of Licor Quarantine Y Tres to celebrate another stay-at-home weekend. My only consolation? I once heard on Ladies Night that Merel Westrik is already eyeing the bottle at one o’clock in the afternoon. And according to stress expert and psychologist Thijs Launspach, that’s totally normal, because we want to reward ourselves.

But from tomorrow onward, we’ll act like it’s a real workweek and won’t drink on weekdays. I’m going to start putting together the wine tasting for next weekend now—email me if you have any supermarket tips.
