Sustainably delicious: brew your own Christmas tree

Replacing all 2.5 million disposable Christmas trees in the Netherlands with sustainable Christmas trees within ten years: that is the mission of brewer Lowlander. Naturally, we’ll raise a glass to that—with a special Christmas beer, of course!

Two years ago, Lowlander issued a call: don’t throw away your Christmas trees after the holidays, but donate them to the brewer to brew the now-famous Winter I.P.A. with them. Despite the great success of this campaign, it soon became clear that the Christmas tree problem is much bigger than expected.

Lowlander Christmas Tree Forest
Annemieke de Been of Lowlander: “We already knew then that, however delicious they are to brew with, disposable Christmas trees are not the most sustainable choice when it comes to Christmas. The few hundred trees we recycled were just the tip of the iceberg, so our mission has now become much more ambitious: within ten years, replace all 2,500,000 disposable Christmas trees in the Netherlands with a sustainable alternative: an organic adopt-a-tree that will last for years. For every Winter I.P.A. sold, brewed with Christmas trees, we will plant young adoptable trees in our own Lowlander Christmas Tree Forest. We then brew our beer with the natural pruning waste; that way, the circle is complete again!”
Contribute a needle too
Another 1,000 trees were added this year, but growing a forest takes time and patience, and Lowlander could use some help. That’s why they are calling on everyone to make things extra cozy at home this year while effortlessly ‘Contributing a Needle’ to a sustainable Christmas mission: 1 cozy BeterBoompje in your home = 2 new adoptable trees in the Christmas Tree Forest! That way, you’ll have both a cozy Christmas (tree) and a good feeling. Oh, and of course another delicious Lowlander winter beer next year.

The Lowlander Christmas Tree Forest
Although you cannot yet adopt a tree from the forest this year because they have not fully grown, you can still do so this year through the collaboration with BeterBoompje. BeterBoompje, an initiative by four friends from Brabant, has a sustainable Christmas tree mission just like Lowlander and Adopteer een Kerstboom. At BeterBoompje, you can rent a Christmas tree with a root ball, which can be replanted after the holidays. You can also choose one without a root ball. In return, Lowlander will plant two new trees in its Christmas Tree Forest. Would you like a sustainable Christmas tree this year too? You can order a better tree here, and they are available in various cities throughout the country.
