Corona or not, the Tony’s Chocolonely train keeps rolling. And thankfully so, because with the new Sweet Solution limited-edition bars, Tony’s is drawing attention to the rotten chocolate industry.

Bittersweet…

For twenty years now, the chocolate industry has been making agreements among itself to put an end to child labor and slavery. Last year, it became clear (again) that virtually none of those promises had been fulfilled. Tony’s thinks it’s time for new action and is launching the new Sweet Solutionbars today, shortly after the publication of the NORC report; an American study that painfully demonstrates that human rights are still being violated on a large scale in Ghana and Ivory Coast.

In 2001, the largest chocolate companies supported the Harkin-Engel Protocol and promised to end illegal child labor and modern slavery in the chocolate supply chain. Almost twenty years later, little has changed, despite various initiatives by these companies. The abuses in the chocolate industry are enormous. Today, 1.56 million children are still working on cocoa plantations in West Africa, and an estimated at least 30,000 people are victims of modern slavery. This once again shows that voluntary initiatives are not enough.
With these limited-edition lookalike bars, Tony’s wants to draw attention to modern slavery and illegal child labor in the chocolate industry and call for legislation that holds companies responsible for abuses in their supply chain. The new bars – wafer pieces, nougat triangles, crunchy hazelnut rounds and caramel biscuit – may have lookalike wrappers, but they’re unmistakably Tony’s. You can find them, among other places, on the shelves of Albert Heijn, Marqt, online at De Bijenkorf and at Tony’s own Super Stores in Amsterdam. The proceeds from Tony’s Sweet Solution bars go to 100WEEKS. A foundation that supports women in Africa in escaping poverty by transferring money directly to them and providing financial training.
