Taste test: the new Doritos with Flame Grilled Whopper flavour
Crazy crisp flavours have been filling supermarket shelves for quite some time now. Lays can certainly do it, but Doritos is just as good at it. Do you remember Doritos Coriander? Or Doritos with guacamole flavour? In collaboration with Burger King, Doritos has now released a new flavour: Flame Grilled Whopper, named after one of the burger chain’s better-known burgers. Does it REALLY taste like you’re eating an extremely crunchy hamburger?
This is not the first time Doritos has teamed up with Burger King, by the way. Burgers with Doritos cheese sauce appeared at the burger chain earlier. And now it’s Doritos releasing crisps in Burger King style. I’m very curious, because I think this is going to be really tasty.
Pickle acidity and meat seasoning
When I open the bag, the smell of a burger immediately flies into my nose. Hey, that’s positive, since the idea is for the crisps to remind you of a burger. What exactly do I smell? Mainly something sour, something like pickle. I can taste that tanginess too when I eat the crisps. If I taste them again (and again and again), I can somehow also pick out something like meat seasoning. Especially when I lick the crisps — sorry for the image that gives you.
That’s about as far as it goes, to be honest. You can really taste the Flame Grilled Whopper flavour best when you lick off the seasoning — sorry again. If you put the crisps straight into your mouth and eat them, you taste it much less. And the flavours you do taste disappear in no time, like snow in the sun.
Final verdict: Doritos Flame Grilled Whopper flavour
Do I like them? Yes! So that expectation comes true. Deliciously crunchy, as you’d expect from Doritos, well seasoned, and I can genuinely taste something like a burger flavour. They aren’t salty crisps, but we now know why that element is missing from crisp bags these days. I keep reaching into the bag while typing this. That says something, I think.
It’s just not that I think you’d immediately identify, in a blind tasting, that they’re meant to be Burger King’s Flame Grilled Whopper. And the flavour disappears very quickly. The solution to that last problem? Keep eating. With these crisps, that’s not a problem at all.
