Tested: burrata filled with Gorgonzola from Lidl
Lidl once again has all kinds of products from its Deluxe range on the shelves. Including burrata filled with Gorgonzola. Naturally, we had to try it. Delicious or best left on the shelf? Here’s what we think.
Burrata with a Gorgonzola filling is not new. Years ago, two brothers in Puglia already made this brilliant discovery and named the love child between these two fantastic cheeses ‘burgonzola.’ Now Lidl has burrata with Gorgonzola on its shelves. What can you expect?
Deluxe burrata
A box costs € 2.49 for 100 grams. When we cut open the plastic packaging and take out the burrata, one thing immediately stands out: the bag is tied shut at the top to keep the contents inside. When we cut it open, something else immediately catches our eye: where is the heart of Gorgonzola? We were hoping for a creamy ball of cheese packed with glistening blue-green mould on the inside. But that’s not the case. It looks as though we’re dealing with an ordinary burrata.
Not much of a kick
‘A delicious combination of creamy burrata and powerful Gorgonzola,’ Lidl promises. But what we taste is nothing like the powerful blue cheese. Not in terms of appearance, and not in terms of flavour either. What a shame—we were expecting a bit more kick. The only moment when we taste any character is at the end. But even then, it’s fairly mild. Good news for people who normally find Gorgonzola too intense, but if you’re drawn to a powerful flavour in your otherwise neutral burrata, you’ll be disappointed.
Be sure to add some flavour boosters to bring out the taste a little more. Grilled pear or peach works well, along with some pine nuts and a little good olive oil, for example.
More filled burrata
Do you love burrata and like the idea of a filled burrata on your drinks board or in your salad? At Albert Heijn, you can buy truffle burrata and pesto burrata. These are considerably more expensive than Lidl’s burrata filled with Gorgonzola, by the way.
