Tested: McDonald’s new Chicken & Waffle
McDonald’s is trying to keep its menu exciting. And honestly? They’re doing a good job. Do you remember when they went all Greek? Yep, the days when you could only order a Big Mac, Euroknaller (come back please) and a portion of chicken nuggets are long gone. Maccies’ latest innovation: the Chicken & Waffle. Also known as the McChicken & Stroopwafel. What can we expect and, more importantly, how does it taste? Snackspert, our savior in times of snack emergencies, has tested it.
In America, they’re crazy about it: fried chicken with bacon and maple syrup. When I went to eat at an American diner in Liverpool recently, I decided to order it again. I can’t help it, because even though every bite adds 10,000 calories; I love it. That combination of sweet and salty and the crunch when you bite into it—I really enjoy it. Can McDonald’s make that dream come true too?
With a Dutch twist
McDonald’s Chicken & Waffle is, at least in the Netherlands, a little different from the well-known American dish. Here, they give it a truly Dutch twist by adding pieces of stroopwafel. Typically Dutch; you won’t see that in America very often. A caramel sauce completes the chicken burger. I don’t know why, but in the image I find the burger less appealing than it sounds. Mainly because I can’t really see any caramel sauce on the burger in the image, which makes it look rather dry to me.
Tasty, but dry
The idea is fun and original, and the crunch is there, but the whole thing turns out to be—indeed—rather dry. That’s mainly because of the chicken. The (tasty) caramel sauce doesn’t necessarily make it much juicier, because the chicken combined with the dry pieces of stroopwafel is simply too much. Snackspert makes a good suggestion: the juicy, more tender chicken from the McCrispy would probably be better than the dry chicken from the McChicken. Snackspert’s full verdict:

‘Idea: a ten, execution: somewhat less. I think the bacon and caramel sauce (a bit too little here, but I was told that this will have changed by tomorrow) and the pieces of stroopwafel combine brilliantly, really delicious, but it’s such a shame they use such a cheap McChicken patty—I would have preferred the (more expensive, admittedly) McCrispy patty here, as it’s much more tender and juicy. That works better with the already rather dry pieces of stroopwafel and the delicious caramel sauce. A tip for next time; for now, it’s simply satisfactory. ⭐️⭐️⭐️’
The comments on Snackspert’s review contain a mix of enthusiasm and criticism of the Chicken & Waffle. Relatable for us:
- We thought the Chicken & Waffle tasted good, but it was seriously bone-dry.. Not cool
- Yes, very dry! Only the middle piece with sauce was really tasty. The amount of sauce really needs to be tripled
- (…) and yet I’m going to try the chicken waffle at some point. I’m so curious about it! Probably not like it is in America, but who knows.
