Website Eat This knows all about that. They asked several people who work in hospitality what the most annoying thing guests can do in a restaurant is, and quite a few points came up.
This is what restaurant staff find really annoying
1. Blaming the restaurant staff for the high prices
I’ve experienced this myself a few times, actually. People who start telling you that they find everything far too expensive, from the food to the house wine. Well, the only solution is: don’t eat here? In any case, there’s very little the restaurant staff can do about it.
2. Talking loudly on the phone in the restaurant
Yes, I simply find that rude too. If someone makes a quick call to say they’ll be late, that’s of course perfectly fine. But making a long phone call, whether for work or personal reasons… Hospitality venues aren’t really the ideal place for that. I think the other guests agree.
3. Expecting all their requests to be accommodated
I increasingly see menus stating ‘no changes can be made,’ but of course there will always be people who don’t care about that. And people who, even if it isn’t stated on the menu, still expect to be able to order the tournedos with the cod’s garnish and the rib-eye sauce, served separately on the side.
4. Groups expecting a table despite not having a reservation
Since the pandemic, I have the impression that you have very little chance of getting into a restaurant without a reservation anyway, especially if you’re with more than four people. And if you then show up with a large group and act very offended because the restaurant has no space… Well, that’s not very pleasant.
5. Making a mess in the restaurant
That’s just a bit rude too, isn’t it? I worked for a few years in a brown café near Leidseplein, and I really had to clean tables that had been smeared with ten packets’ worth of mayonnaise and ketchup. Seriously, why? I always wonder what motivates people like that.
6. Walking into the kitchen uninvited
Apparently the restaurant staff find this very annoying, and I can understand that too — but I also often see people do this to personally thank the chef. At least the intention is good, I suppose. Although I can also understand that they can really get in your way.
