The 9 Streets in Amsterdam Are Being Overrun by TikTokers

I can honestly scroll through TikTok for hours and am currently very happy with my algorithm; it takes a little while to get going at first, but now I’m regularly treated to TikToks with the very best tips. Amsterdam is no exception; I’ve been coming there all my life, but I still don’t know all the great spots. Not by a long shot.

Not everyone is happy with these TikTok trends, though: the 9 Streets in Amsterdam are now packed with queues because of businesses going viral on the app.
‘No, of course I’m not happy about this’
Much to the annoyance of the owners of shops in these popular (shopping streets), who have voiced their complaints to Het Parool. The queues for the popular food spots can stretch the length of the entire street, which means people are constantly standing in front of shop windows waiting. Well, it’s hardly surprising that shop owners aren’t exactly thrilled about that.
‘I’m spending more time keeping fry cartons out of the shop than selling clothes. See that stain on the wooden floor? That was a blob of mayonnaise from someone who came in while eating,’ the shop owner goes on to tell Het Parool. Her shop is next door to a chip shop (Fabel Friet) that is currently hugely popular thanks to TikTok. Plenty of tourists, as well as locals, are perfectly happy to queue there for an hour to get their hands on some fries.
Van Stapele’s cookies are also more popular than ever (and they were certainly already popular before TikTok), and these days you also need to set aside a couple of hours if you want to get a sandwich from Chun. The latter now even has signs to let waiting customers know how long it will take (‘from here, there’s still half an hour of waiting’). Well, it’s starting to look quite a lot like an overcrowded theme park.
The shop owners hope that the municipality of Amsterdam will intervene soon, because things are really getting out of hand. One small consolation: TikTok trends arrive quickly, and eventually disappear just as quickly. But yes… That doesn’t help you much right now, of course.
