They know how to cook in the beautiful, far north, believe us. These restaurants in Friesland are absolutely worth a visit.

‘t Plein

Well-known Frisian chef Reitse Spanninga has been running restaurant ‘t Plein in Joure since 1988. Take a seat at the kitchen table or settle in at the atmospheric restaurant. Reitse takes you on a culinary journey through his Fryslân with organic produce. The menu offers a fine combination of French classics with a local twist. Naturally, with a healthy dose of Dutch pragmatism.

Lyf’s

Here too, you’ll eat classic dishes, but once again with a local twist. Think organic shiitakes from De Veenhoop, berries from Lippenhuizen, Wadden oysters and greens from the Natuurtuin. The fresh, no-nonsense interior makes fine dining accessible to everyone.\

‘t Spijshuys

In 2017, this restaurant was awarded a Michelin Bib Gourmand for the eighteenth time. You’ll also find the establishment in the Gault Millau and the Lekker 500. The menu features a Huzarensalade 2.0 (with pork neck) and next-level hutspot. Want to go all in? Then choose the special ten-course menu. Plenty of reason to head to the far North and let yourself be surprised.

Restaurant Eindeloos

Organic restaurant Eindeloos is housed in a monumental building in the heart of Leeuwarden. Here you eat a set menu composed entirely of seasonal produce. So what you eat differs from day to day. The interior is surprisingly hip, with a country-style twist.

Pizzeria Pingjum

This pizzeria is known far into the Randstad. Some people even drive miles out of their way to get there. The pizza comes from a traditional Italian stone oven, but is topped with Frisian produce. Think shellfish and shrimp from the Wadden Sea. Joël Broekaert even ate the best pizza he had eaten in the Netherlands in years—and we’re fans too.

Restaurant élevé

At this Michelin-starred restaurant, you dine at a high level—literally and figuratively. Namely, at the top of the WTC hotel. And what can you expect? Sea bass in fennel escabeche with Wadden oyster, oyster foam, dill and lime snow, or brook char with pine needles and Frisian Wâldgieltsje (apple). Another nice touch: complete your evening with a cocktail from the sky bar.

More star-studded dining in Friesland? You can do so at Koriander and De Heeren van Harinxma.
