Old Scuola
Old Scuola is without a doubt the coolest kid on this list. They first appeared on my radar with some incredibly cool designer stainless-steel pizza bus and have been creating something tremendously polished since day one. The photography, the terrazzo tabletop, the concrete, the stainless-steel oven, the logo… and then the pizzas are also absolutely delicious. The dough is made in the Neapolitan style and the toppings are both of high Italian quality and local – mushroom pizza with Rotterdam-grown mushrooms, for example. That gives the concise menu an even more exciting twist, which I’m all for. Natural wine obviously belongs on the menu in this industrial atmosphere. And cocktails. Hooray for the fact that this pizzeria has no fewer than two locations in Rotterdam.

Burro e Salvia
Another Neapolitan place, because I love those. I’m also very fond of the name, because butter and sage are one of my favourite pairings from Italy. Do they make you think of pasta first? Correct. The small restaurant in Katendrecht also makes homemade pasta, but that’s not what we’re here for today. The pizza dough is given no fewer than fifty hours to rise peacefully before going into the blazing-hot wood-fired oven. There’s a choice of just over ten varieties with classic ingredients and plenty of attention for vegetarians and even vegans – more than half of the pizzas are vegetarian.
Burro e Salvia – Delistraat 16, Rotterdam
O’Pazzo
A pizzeria in Rotterdam that is anything but traditional. No transplanted Italian family behind the pans here, but a successful hospitality group simply doing what it does best. O’Pazzo is inspired by energetic Naples, and so are the pizzas, but the base wouldn’t pass the inspection of the strict AVPN, or The True Neapolitan Pizza Association (Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana), and leans a little more towards the Roman style. That doesn’t matter one bit, because the pizzas are good and the restaurants (there are two) are cosy. Besides pizza, there’s also a huge selection of antipasti, pasta and the like. O’Pazzo also earns bonus points for its motto All day Italian, meaning: you can and may eat pizza there all day long.
O’Pazzo – Mariniersweg 90 & Karel Doormanstraat 34, Rotterdam
La Pizza
It seems to be a thing in the Harbour City: once again, a pizzeria in Rotterdam with two locations on the map. When successful, pizzerias apparently like to expand, and that goes for La Pizza too. And you might not expect it, but La Pizza also has an antipasti list that could pass for a complete menu. In case you want to convince people who aren’t in the mood for pizza. I’d leave them at home anyway. Back to the pizzeria: they get it here. Tradition without becoming boring, a beautiful restaurant, a photographer who ought to share in the tip because the photos alone make you hungry, and pizza makers who are thoroughly Italian. Oh, these are the thin ones from Rome, by the way – the pizzas, that is. More than generously topped and looking good enough to eat.
La Pizza – Scheepstimmermanslaan 21 & Bentinckplein 1-3, Rotterdam
Angelo Betti
Classic Angelo Betti is so good that it even features among our favourite Italian restaurants in Rotterdam. Absolutely not a polished establishment like, for example, number one on this list, but quite the opposite – and that makes the whole thing wonderfully charming. The opposite in every way, really, because this pizzeria has an endless list of pizzas on the menu, meaning you can choose a different pizza for the whole family and in-laws. So I could go on about the flavours, but you’ll be busy for a while before you’ve tasted them all. Don’t forget to order an ice cream afterwards, because Angelo Betti has been doing that well for years too.
