The best restaurant in the world

It’s that time again: The World’s 50 Best Restaurants have been announced. Until recently, the top spot belonged to Eleven Madison Park*** in New York, but this year an old familiar name has returned to the top. 

Osteria Francescana*** (Modena, Italy), run by chef Massimo Bottura, has made a comeback and may call itself the best restaurant in the world for the entire year. In second place is El Celler de Can Roca*** (Girona, Spain), run by the Roca brothers. They are no strangers to the top five either. In 2017, they were knocked off the throne by Eleven Madison Park. This year, third place goes to Mirazur** (Menton, France). So, only European restaurants in the top three.

Italian hospitality

According to Osteria Francescana, Italian hospitality lies in the details. Art by Damien Hirsch and Maurizio Cattelan adorns the walls, while the restaurant’s twelve tables are set with meticulous care. This is where you get to experience Massimo Bottura’s food, which you may already have admired while watching Chef’s Table. Good luck securing a table: on the day reservations open, you could easily spend the entire day in the queue, and it will only get worse now. Are you one of the lucky ones? Then definitely go for the tasting menu so you can try everything. We are certainly jealous.

National pride

The highest-ranked Dutch restaurant is De Librije***, run by Jonnie and Thérèse Boer. They are ranked 51st on the list. And Eleven Madison Park? The restaurant is now in fourth place. Still very high, but we can imagine they are a tiny bit disappointed nonetheless. Oh well, everything will be different again in 2019.
