The Netherlands gets its very first SNERT bar

A bowl of thick, lumpy, soothingly soft snert like that really makes me very happy. Especially with genuinely delicious smoked sausage in it, mmm! At the moment, there’s really only one option for satisfying this winter-food craving: make it yourself. Because a can of snert from the supermarket is often a huge disappointment. But hey, that’s about to change!

Chef Joris Bijdendijk and Samuel Levie (from Brandt & Levie worstmakers), two of the most active foodies in Amsterdam’s culinary scene, are launching SNERT: finally, genuinely flavourful tinned pea soup.
Sour mess
It all began when Samuel and Joris tasted a can of supermarket pea soup. The can was not only dirt cheap, but also very sour, grainy in texture and packed with e-numbers. It’s a mortal sin that the icon of Dutch cuisine is in such a state, according to the two men. Canning is a fantastic method, and pea soup is exceptionally well suited to it. So it shouldn’t be difficult to bring the two together in an honourable way. Enter: SNERT!

Year of snert
They developed a recipe that can be produced on a large scale and genuinely tastes delicious. It’s a soup made with, of course, split peas, plenty of leaf and celeriac, carrot, parsnip and naturally Brandt & Levie’s smoked sausage, which is already a flavour powerhouse in its own right. Joris: “Tinned food is a magical invention; we should remind ourselves of that a little more. It starts with good ingredients. In the coming years, we’re going to give the world of tins a thorough makeover!” Samuel: “We can certainly call 2020 a snert year, which is why we’re launching SNERT in fitting style on Friday the 13th. That way, the year can still take a positive turn.”
SNERT bar
Tomorrow, Friday the 13th, Joris and Samuel will launch the soup from the Netherlands’ first pop-up SNERT bar, at Overtoom 112 in Amsterdam. At the SNERT bar, pea-soup lovers can pick up a warm bowl of soup, buy a can of SNERT (€ 6,95 each) or purchase a complete SNERT package. For 15 euros, this package consists of:
1 can of SNERT (+ 1 can for the food bank)
1 packet of rye bread
1 tub of mustard spread
1 piece of filled speculaas for dessert.
Snert sharing is caring
Besides the SNERT bar, the SNERT package is delivered exclusively by Deliveroo and is also available at all STACH shops. In collaboration with Deliveroo and STACH, 1 can of soup is donated to Voedselbank Amsterdam for every SNERT package sold. A lovely and thoughtful gesture, if you ask me!
