The Open Dutch Culinary Wild BBQ Championship 2024 is coming: are you joining?
On Saturday, October 19, you can show everyone that you’re a real barbecue boss. That’s when the Open Dutch Culinary Wild BBQ Championship will take place. During the third edition of the Open Dutch Culinary Wild BBQ Championship, the best BBQ teams from the Netherlands and abroad will compete against each other. And at a beautiful location: De Hoge Veluwe National Park.
Briquettes, wood or charcoal
Culinary barbecuing with Dutch game produces wonderful results, as previous editions have already proved. Last year, participants were given a goose in its feathers, which turned out to be quite an experience. This year, things have been made a little easier for the participants, but it will certainly still be spectacular! And whatever type of barbecue you use, you may heat it with briquettes, wood or charcoal.
Open Dutch Culinary Wild BBQ Championship
During the Open Dutch Culinary Wild BBQ Championship, each team must prepare four different dishes—with local game meat—at Michelin-star level. And all with just one tool: a barbecue. The four different dishes are:
- Wild boar stew
- Venison dish
- Pigeon dish
- Dish made from the Mystery Box
A jury of master chefs and Michelin-starred chefs will assess the four dishes. Presentation, flavour and technique will be taken into account. The rules are simple: each dish may consist of a maximum of 50% of the main ingredient (wild boar, pigeon or venison), which you may complement with your own brought-along products (prepared on site).
You may use whatever you like from the mystery box. You may add your own dried herbs and spices. Dried algae are not permitted, nor are any other items; this means disqualification. You can find the other regulations here.
Small game is welcome too
Be sure to bring some supporters, because the Open Dutch Culinary Wild BBQ Championship is not just fun for participants. Throughout the day, various workshops and demonstrations will be organised, giving regular visitors plenty to taste and experience. Small game is included too. For the little ones, there will be a small wood fire where they can pop their own popcorn, for example.
There will be food trucks and a culinary BBQ market. Edge Kings sharpening service will be there to get your knives truly sharp as a knife, and butcher’s shop Wilbrink from Otterlo will give demonstrations on butchering game.

Want to grill yourself? Participation as a team costs 100 euros. This includes the main ingredients for the first three challenges and a complete Mystery Box. Each team must provide its own tent, BBQs, fire extinguisher, first-aid kit, fuel, worktables, etc. Registration is possible via gastropedia.nl until October 1, 2024.
