15 of the tastiest BBQ recipes for this summer

Given the weather lately, I can imagine that an extra-thick layer of dust has gathered on your barbecue. But after rain comes sunshine, and after stew weather comes… barbecue weather! With our 15 favorite BBQ dishes, you’ll be the real hero behind the grill this summer.

P.S. Leftovers from yesterday’s barbecue? Here’s what to do with them.
1. Double cheeseburger from Jord Althuizen’s BBQ
A thick, juicy double cheeseburger goes down well with everyone (who doesn’t identify as vegetarian), right? You can’t say no to this version by Jord Althuizen. Another thing you can’t say after eating the burger: “bleh” or “yuck.” This double burger, with cheddar, blue cheese, homemade BBQ sauce and onion rings on the side, will keep you full for the rest of the week. Sorry, not sorry.
2. Barbecued cauliflower with Cape spices
You’re either a true BBQ meister or you’re not. So here’s another barbecue dish by Jord Althuizen: this cauliflower with Cape spices. A colorful dish that requires plenty of love. The cauliflower slowly roasts over a hot barbecue, after which you pour a spicy Malay curry sauce over it. If we’d known this recipe 15 years ago, our boring meat-potatoes-vegetables dinners would have looked very different.

3. Grilled monkfish
Fish is perfect for grilling on the barbecue. Take this recipe for grilled monkfish. A deliciously firm fish, given an Indian touch with a garam masala spice blend. The fresh raita with cucumber, yogurt and mint is a lovely contrast. For even more tips on grilling perfect fish on your barbecue, read this.
4. Barbecue pizza bread
Easy to make and guaranteed to be a hit at your barbecue: pizza bread. With a crispy crust and perfectly melted cheese. So delicious that you’ll suddenly wonder why you’d ever bake this Italian delicacy in an oven again.
5. BBQ pork cheeks
Prepare these pork cheeks properly and they’ll be so tender that they fall apart as you eat them. And that’s exactly what you want. The book BBQ Time by Susan Aretz, from which this dish comes, is highly recommended for any barbecue devotee.
6. Baby BBQ pineapple filled with Snickers
Of course, the barbecue is by no means only for grilling meat or fish. Hello, what about desserts?! Our all-time favorite is this pineapple filled with our favorite chocolate bar: Snickers. Yep, it’s just as absurdly delicious as it sounds. Just imagine a sweet-and-sour bite of pineapple with the flavor of chocolate and peanuts—Snickers, in other words… This is a one-way ticket to heaven, I guarantee it.

7. Barbecue sauce with… Twix
What works with Snickers obviously works with Twix too. And it can also come in the form of… a sauce. Take this chocolate barbecue sauce, made with Twix. You probably can’t imagine the chocolate-barbecue combination, but soon you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it. Deal? Perfect for glazing your meat.
8. Vegan BBQ shawarma
For a long time, the standard image was this: when people thought of barbecue, they thought of tough guys in leather aprons roasting large pieces of meat. Pretty clichéd, don’t you think? Not only because women can—obviously—be the heroes behind the cue too, but also because the coals don’t have to hold meat exclusively. Take this vegan barbecue shawarma, made with oyster mushrooms. This is how you’ll always want your shawarma sandwich from now on—even when you’re stumbling out of the bar in the middle of the night.
9. Vegan BBQ tacos with jackfruit
Another testament to how trendy and delicious vegan barbecue food can be: these jackfruit tacos. Season the jackfruit with plenty of spices and add homemade sticky barbecue sauce. Serve with a fresh avocado salsa. This dish will make everyone at the table happy—vegan or not.

10. Barbecue apple-pie parcels
It only becomes a real party with these foil-wrapped apple-pie parcels, prepared on the barbecue. That’s certainly different from the traditional apple-pie recipe your grandmother taught you! Want to score extra points with your guests? Add this secret ingredient to the parcels.
11. Barbecue potatoes with cheese
Forget dry, boring boiled potatoes: you can make that tuber much sexier. How about a generous pile of melted cheese and a session on the barbecue? These barbecue potatoes with mozzarella and Parmesan are a dream for cheese freaks, potato enthusiasts and barbecue fans. And when the BBQ starts gathering dust in the shed again, simply make them in the oven.
12. Jord Althuizen’s Rocketman Wienersandwich
Nice to meet you—may I introduce your new all-time favorite from the grill? This is the Rocketman Wienersandwich, otherwise known as heaven in a hot dog bun. With hot dogs, bacon and pork belly at its core, this is definitely not a light dish, but it will make a serious impression. With kimchi, nacho sauce and lime mayo—sorry if you’re drooling at your keyboard now.
13. Barbecue pineapple skewers
They’re incredibly easy to make and real crowd pleasers. I’m talking about these pineapple skewers. What makes them irresistible is the Thai dressing. Sweet from the palm sugar, fresh from the lime and mildly spicy from the onion. Save the recipe, because your guests are guaranteed to want to add this to their own repertoire.

14. BBQ pork belly
Meat your knife glides through, with a sweet sauce you’ll want to keep in a jar in the fridge at all times. Do I need to convince you any further? Make this tender, succulent barbecue pork belly!
15. S’mores with strawberries and chocolate
Put an American behind the barbecue and, guaranteed—besides kilos of meat and liters of beer—S’mores will be devoured that evening. The tea biscuits with marshmallows between them are a classic over there, and I actually think we eat them far too little here. Just think how delicious that is, especially with strawberries and chocolate added.
