The tastiest alcohol-free beers
Dry January has become a regular fixture for many people by now. I also try to cut back on alcohol every now and then – although I do think a month is a very long time… But now that the range of alcohol-free beer is getting bigger and bigger, an evening or longer without alcohol is becoming less and less difficult. Because there are so many types of beer that are genuinely delicious and alcohol-free.
I think that’s a really great development. It might sound a little sad, but I find (and feel) that I’m much more sociable when you’re ‘joining in’ with the drinks with a beer in your hand instead of a litre of sparkling water. And of course there’s the 0.0 pilsner, but sometimes you simply want something different. An IPA, for example. Yes, you read that right: you can get those alcohol-free now too! Jopen Non IPA
You do have to be a bit of an IPA fan, of course, but if you are: this one is really very good. I already find Jopen’s beer very tasty (and think it’s a great brand), and it’s quite an achievement to make an alcohol-free IPA that genuinely tastes good. Well, a small side note: it contains 0.3%. But I’m counting that.
Heineken 0.0
I think Heineken 0.0 pilsner is incredibly tasty. You shouldn’t alternate it with ‘regular’ Heineken, because then they’ll both start tasting very strange, but I really don’t mind drinking this 0.0 for an evening. Especially when it’s on tap; ideal!
Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier Alkoholfrei
A wheat beer, and that happens to be one of my favourites. You can probably guess from the name, but this is indeed a German beer. Hardly distinguishable from the real thing.
Brugse SportZot
According to bierista.nl, the very best when it comes to alcohol-free beer, and well, who am I to disagree? It’s very tasty too, and a top alternative for speciality beer lovers. This one is very reminiscent of the blonde beer from this Belgian brewery.
Brand IPA 0.0
Another IPA on this list, which I’m seeing more and more often in the hospitality industry. Great! Very fruity and fresh. Not a beer you can drink all evening, but you don’t tend to do that with an IPA anyway. I’d be curious to see what would happen in a blind tasting… Would you be able to taste the difference between this and the alcoholic IPA? I wonder.
Franziskaner Weissbier Alkoholfrei
One more wheat beer, then. Not entirely alcohol-free: it contains 0.5%, but that’s good enough for me. Another German wheat beer, from Munich. Very pleasantly fresh and light. This is one I can drink all evening, no problemo.
Affligem Blond 0.0
A must try for blonde beer lovers. With the ‘regular’ alcoholic version, I’m already under the table after two of these (I really can’t handle blonde beer), but I do like the taste. The solution: the alcohol-free version! It’s just as tasty, and I don’t have to crawl home. Win-win.
