The viral Tinder date that ended in a £15,000 wine bill? Fake news

Bullitt

A £15,000 bill on a first date… Who would have thought swiping right could be so expensive? No one, right? What’s more, the viral story isn’t true either. Fake news alert.

Have you been living under a rock this week? Here’s the story. A tale went around on Twitter about a woman in the UK who made a major wine blunder on a first date. She thought she had ordered a bottle of wine costing £50 (which works out at around €55). Three bottles later, when she got the bill, it turned out to be slightly more expensive: £5,000 per bottle. Oops. She was allowed to pay in monthly installments. Ouch.

Fake news

Pretty sensational, but not true. The Shard, the tallest building in London and the place where it supposedly happened, denies the entire story. No restaurant or other business in the building knew anything about the story. And the only place where it actually took place was the world of the internet.

Could it happen to anyone?

The story may not have been true, but we can learn from it. Because what if it happens to you one day? Bad news. If you’ve looked at the wine or food menu and eaten the food, you are obliged to pay. If it’s the other way around and the price is listed incorrectly on the menu, then of course the restaurant is out of luck. Also, unlike in England, restaurants in the Netherlands are not obliged to arrange a payment plan for you. So pay close attention and don’t wine if you suddenly have to do the dishes for months because you can’t pay the bill. You’ve been warned.
