The winners of the Gault&Millau Awards 2023 have been announced

Guido Braeken

This afternoon (Monday, February 13, 2023), the new Gault&Millau guide 2023 was launched. Under the watchful eye of the top names in Dutch gastronomy, all the winners were honored on the stage of Tivoli/Vredenburg. From the best Asian restaurant to the finest cocktail bar, according to Gault&Millau, this is where you need to be.

Gault&Millau restaurant guide is the main competitor of the Michelin Guide. Like Michelin, the guide contains restaurant reviews. Gault&Millau does this using symbolic chef’s hats, with the ratings broadly meaning:
– 10, 11 and 12: Restaurant of a fair to interesting standard
– 13 and 14: Good, well-presented table, reliable and sometimes original
– 15 and 16: Restaurant or brasserie offering a special cuisine
– 17 and 18: Very high-class table, memorable experiences
– 19 and 20: The undisputed top tier

The biggest difference between Michelin and Gault&Millau lies in the details. For example, Gault&Millau inspectors also take into account the cuissons (the cooking of meat or fish), flavor and presentation, the welcome, wine recommendations, opening days and whether or not the chef is present in their assessment. They also consider the attention, timing, atmosphere and even the chairs. Michelin looks more at the bigger picture.

This year, Gault&Millau once again appeared as a printed guide in the traditional manner. It lists 74 restaurants in the Netherlands that received 16 points or more. The rest of the more than 850 restaurants and their scores can be found online at gault-millau.nl.

(Young) Chef of the Year

Gault&Millau also presents several awards. This time, the ‘Chef of the Year’ award went to Jan Sobecki of Tribeca in Heeze. He was praised for his burning ambition and balanced flavor combinations. The ‘Young Chef of the Year’ award was presented to Guido Braeken. According to the jury, his highly refined dishes with contemporary twists reveal immense passion for the kitchen and an abundance of class. Will he get a Gault&Millau tattoo in addition to his two stars?

The ‘Highest Newcomer of the Year’ category even has 2 winners this year: SAAM Restaurant in Amstelveen and Yano in Rotterdam, both immediately earning 14.5 out of 20 points and two chef’s hats.
