These are the most photographed dishes on Instagram

If there’s one platform that has a gigantic influence on our food, it’s Instagram: suddenly we’re all food photographers and massively sharing whatever we eat. But which dishes do we actually post most on Insta?

Avocado toast, freakshakes, cronuts, smoothie bowls and anything unicorn/galaxy/rainbow, you might think. But no. Nothing could be further from the truth, as shown by an study by British meal-kit company Gousto.

I call bullshit

And what do you know? With almost 38 million posts, pizza is the absolute winner. We get it. Everyone’s favorite is simply amazing. But… much to my surprise, Gousto lists the country of origin of pizza not as Italy, but the US. New York, to be precise. Uh… what?! New York pizza is all well and good and delicious, but that’s obviously nonsense. Pizza is originally Italian. And while most of the pizzas appearing on Instagram may look more like the American version, I say: give credit where credit is due, so as far as I’m concerned, Italy is number one.

Top 10

All right, let’s not be too thrown off by this false start. The top three are rounded out by hamburgers in second place and sushi in third. Further down the top 10: steak, macarons, pho, lamb, fried chicken, pesto and poké bowls.

In other words: lots of meat, fat, comfort food and typical takeout/delivery dishes versus very little sweetness.

By continent

Gousto also created a few fun infographics for each continent showing how often certain typical dishes were posted on Instagram:
