I say fake news, but these Blue Java bananas are not new at all. According to the Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers, these fruits have been growing in Hawaii since 1920. They are the product of bananas that mutate naturally, so they are completely natural.
What does the Blue Java banana taste like?
These bananas are quite different from your typical Chiquita banana. On the tree, before they are ripe, these bananas are blue; afterwards, they turn yellowish with a tint that makes them look frozen. The Blue Java banana is also known as an ice cream banana. That’s because the bananas have a very creamy and fluffy texture, like ice cream. The banana also tastes a little like vanilla. Sounds delicious.
Unfortunately, we have to travel a little for Blue Java bananas, because they are not yet available as a mass-produced product. To try them, you have to go to Hawaii, other parts of the United States such as Florida, or parts of Southeast Asia.
