Emma’s food annoyances: green bananas at the supermarket

I eat often, a lot and with great enthusiasm, and that means I regularly notice things. Often, these are positive things, but it also frequently happens that something irritates me immensely. Whether that’s justified or not, sometimes I just need to vent. Hence this feature: Emma’s food annoyances, with a supermarket frustration this week. Why are there only bright green bananas on the shelves?

I have quark and a banana for breakfast every morning. The ideal breakfast for people like me, who actually don’t like breakfast at all. Slice a banana, stir it into the quark, and you’re done. I pick up my breakfast on the way to work, so I want to eat it right away, but all the bananas I come across at the supermarket are green and rock-hard. Why?
Hard and tasteless
Is it just me, and do most people prefer their bananas hard and tasteless? The less ripe the banana, the less sweet and flavorful it is. How is that enjoyable? And is the turnover of bananas so high that those green bananas never sit around for a few days and develop into actually edible bananas? Can’t the supermarket hold the bananas back for a few days and only put them on the shelves when they’re delicious?
Don’t be so dramatic
And yes, I can hear you thinking: “Emma, don’t be so dramatic; just buy your bananas a few days in advance.” Sometimes I do, but then I forget that I have bananas and suddenly, after a week and a half, I have almost rotten bananas. Not the end of the world either—I just make delicious banana bread with them. However, this absolutely does not solve my breakfast problem.
Golden tip?
This problem occurs at literally every supermarket where I shop. Whether it’s Dirk (where you pay no less than 13% less than average for your fruit) or Appie, I even run into green bananas at the wholesaler. Who has the golden tip? Every supermarket sells ripe-to-eat avocados, so why can’t they do the same with bananas? Surely no one would buy green strawberries or tomatoes either? Ridiculous!
