These crispy cottage fries should conquer the Netherlands now, as far as we’re concerned

We could write a little ode to the potato every day: name one other thing that is so versatile that you can make the most delicious mash, fries, boiled potatoes, fried slices and baked spuds from it. And chips, not to forget! And those very chips, as well as slices, are the inspiration for this dream version of potatoes: crispy cottage fries.

‘Crispy cottage fries?’ we hear you thinking – never heard of them… That’s possible, but we think that needs to change. Because what are cottage fries? Essentially just simple potato slices, but fried (or, fine, oven-baked) until they are so crispy that the crust is golden brown and crunchy, while the inside is soft, fluffy and steaming hot. Yum!
Love it loaded
And what gives them that extra ‘fries’ element? Load them up with all kinds of delicious sauces and perhaps a topping too: like in the photo above, with bacon bits, sour cream and something with a good kick, such as sriracha mayo. You want that, right?
Give us our daily cottage fries
In any case, cottage fries are ideal for mopping up sauce thanks to their slightly scalloped shape; just imagine how much ketchup you can dip with one of these at a time. They are the perfect vehicle, and honestly, we really don’t understand why they aren’t on the menu at every snack bar or restaurant in the country. So here’s our friendly request to everyone in the Netherlands who sells anything from a deep fryer: please give us crispy cottage fries!
