These foodie maps are completely useless

Maps you don’t need, didn’t ask for, and that provide information you’re not waiting for: that’s the specialty of Terrible Maps, an Instagram account where hopeless and useless world maps are shared. The map of Japan, for example, made from mandarin peel.

The past wasn’t always better

Perhaps this needs some explaining for younger readers: there was no Google Maps or Maps.me back then; even the internet was still made of wood and bits of copper wire. In those harsh times, geographical information had to be looked up in an atlas, a thick book (just Google it) containing maps. These maps showed not only national borders, rivers and mountain ranges, but sometimes also graphs of income, climatic conditions or air currents. And some people turned these maps into entire works of art. An art form that is in danger of being lost, but that fortunately still shows one last gasp of life on Instagram.
