These Pigs Are Fed Weed

You never have to have tried it to know that weed makes you relax. The pigs on this farm are fed weed. Apparently, it makes the meat extra flavorful, but does it work? And do the pigs get high?

Eater visited farmer Dave at Moto Perpetuo Farm in Oregon, America. Dave grows cannabis plants and feeds them to his pigs to make the pork extra flavorful. He gets the seeds for a particular type of cannabis plant from – yes, you read that right – a Dutch seed breeder.
Not high
The usable parts of the cannabis plants grown here are sold as cannabis for smoking. That is perfectly legal in Oregon. The remaining parts of the plant – as much as 25 percent – are used as feed for the pigs. These are the green scraps of the plant that would normally be thrown away. So no, the pigs do not get high from it.
Win-win
Moto Perpetuo Farm has therefore found a way to both grow cannabis that is sold for smoking and feed the pigs with the remaining part of the plant. Pigs simply taste better when fed plant-based food, and this method is cheaper than growing new plants. Quite a win-win situation, then, when you look at farmer Dave’s business model.
